To be fair, I've had similar issues with a couple of collections of M.R James' work from another publisher - though in that case it's an insistence of bridging the gaps between the stories with 'mood' music. I have a number of Big Finish recordings in my library, and this isn't as large an issue as it is on these more atmospheric stories. I want a straight reading on an audio book, and frankly the addition of music to any degree within the body of the text is distracting for me and (inn this case) completely breaks the mood. Unfortunately, I did not realize that there was music added in the background to 'enhance' the reading. I waited for some time for this to hit release, having had a longtime familiarity with Hodgson's stories and others subsequently written, using these central characters. The reader and productions values are excellent, they deserve someone better than Hope Hodgeson to interpret.Ī Disappointment Due To 'Atmospheric' Music It is too bad, because Hope Hodgeson is an good writter and evokes the atmosphere of Victorian Ghost Story with a great deal of ability, but the constant assault on the dogs and cats (and probably others as well, but I have permanently stopped reading Hope Hodgson at this point so I will never know) is too great an obstacle to my enjoyment. The second story was even worse with SPOILER ALERT three completely innocent dogs murdered for no reason at all, the last in full view of Carnacki who was armed and could have stopped it at any time, and quite graphically described as well just in case I didn't feel bad enough allready. I had read the first story in this collection years ago, so I knew to skip the entire episode of the cat, but I had hoped that that would be an anomaly. I am aware that he is dead and nothing can be done about him now, but his stories are completely ruined, for me anyway, by his devotion to brutalizing and murdering random domestic pets.
Hope Hodgeson should be in jail for animal abuse.
